PTR TOFMS Movie

The animated GIF image above shows a section of the spectra acquired by a proton transfer reactor (PTR) time-of-flight mass spectromter (TOFMS) in a demonstration experiment where a sampling inlet was switched rapidly between vials containing fabric softener and cola. The mass range recorded ran from 1 to approximately 250 atomic mass units, but the major and compound specific changes to the spectra are prominant in the range above, as can be seen in the associated chromatograms. The movie is displayed here mostly for a bit of fun, but playing in real-time here (see time marker) it does illustrate the speed of this instrument.
