Affordable FTIR equipment from Interspectrum
Kore is pleased to be able to offer Interspectrum's range of FTIR equipment.
Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy can be used to analyse gases, liquids and solids. Compared to mass spectrometry FTIR is less sensitive, typically capable of detecting low ppm levels rather than the ppb and ppt levels attainable in MS. In addition whereas mass spectrometry provides a direct identification of an unknown compound's molecular weight the IR spectrum of a material is a molecular finger-print allowing an unknown chemical to be identified by comparison with the huge database of IR spectra of materials. Nevertheless the higher cost of mass spectrometers compared to FTIR equipment, which unlike MS do not require a vacuum, and their ease of use and versatility means that FTIR instruments have ubiquitous applications.
Typical applications of FTIR include the measurement of organic and inorganic gases typically from the percent level down to the ppm level in industrial processes such as gas production. Also FTIRs are used extensively to measure controlled and uncontrolled emissions from manufacturing processes as well as the characterisation of automobile exhaust emissions.
FTIR is used for the characterisation and compositional analysis of plastics and polymer formulations not only for quality control on new products but in recycling plants as a simple non-destructive screening method. FTIR can be used for the detection of thin organic coatings on semiconductor and metallic substrates and even on plastic substrates. FTIR is used to provide forensic trace evidence from droplets or liquid residues, powders, fragments of plastics, fibres and dust found at crime scenes. As well as identify paper, inks and drugs in crime investigations. FTIR is used routinely for the identification of geological samples. FTIR is used for quality control on food and beverage products including liquid dairy products for its major constituents, culture growth of yogurts, maturation of cheese, processed products such as meats and even chocolates.
As might be expected, with the vast array of gas, liquid and solid samples that can be analysed with FTIR a wide range of sample handling procedures are required. These can be supplied with the basic Interspectrum FTIR equipment listed below:

FTIR, Bench top
The Interspec 200-X series of FTIR spectrometers provide low cost Fourier transform infrared spectrometer solutions which employ a number of unique features to ensure high performance from a compact instrument. The Interspec 200-X measures just 59 x 39 x 19 cm and is regarded as one of the most compact and versatile infrared FTIR spectrophotometers available. The design of the 200-X is unique both in terms of optical design and the software and firmware designed specifically to significantly reduce overall analytical times. The interferometer geometry employs a new compact Michelson self-compensating optical system that eliminates many of the optical alignment problems found in conventional optical interferometers. The Interspec 200-X design avoids the use of conventional corner cube optics and dynamic alignment. In practice this means that the instrument can be used in the research laboratory, in any university or college environment and if required, can also be used outside laboratory or in remote locations.
FTIR, Portable
The Interspec 300-X series of FTIR portable spectrometers provide low cost Fourier transform infrared and near infrared portable spectrometer solutions which employ a number of unique features to ensure high performance from a compact instrument. The Interspec 300-X measures just 49 X 39 X 20 cm and is regarded as one of the most compact and versatile infrared FTIR spectrophotometers available. FTIR, Module
The INTERSPEC series FTIR modules are stable, rugged units requiring the minimum of external utilities.
- The sealed, desiccated enclosure keeps the interferometer dry.
- The IR/NIR source does not require water cooling.
- The interferometer mechanical bearing does not require a gas supply.
For easy access, those system components which have a finite lifetime (i.e. laser, and radiation source) are located at the front side of the module. A yellow LED indicator indicates, when the scanning is turned on.
Infrared sources
The infrared sources described below have been designed for Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), Spectrophotometry and general use. They can easily be interfaced to several types of existing commercial infrared spectrophotometers.
Each IR source is manufactured from a unique high temperature wire alloy developed especially for infra red spectrophotometers allowing continued use in the range of 1150-1200 °C. This high temperature provides both high radiance and high emissivity not available from other alloys. Net radiance is equal or even superior to both Ceramic and Nernst designs.
The following types of sources are available as standard:
Type 1: IR source - 2.5V
The dimensions are 70mm length x 36mm diameter. A unique ceramic sleeve internally screens the source. The diameter of the emitter is 6 mm.
Type 2: IR source - 5.0V
The dimensions are 37mm length x 25mm diameter. A unique ceramic sleeve internally screens the source. The diameter of the emitter is 6 mm.
Type 3: retrofit coil - 2.5V
A standard replacement source (retrofit coil) for Interspec type FTIR spectrometers using IR source type 1. Overall length is 37mm, the diameter of the emitter is 6 mm.
Type 4: IR parallel source - 2.5V
A collimated infra red source employing a type 1 source interfaced to a parabolic off-axis mirror. The output is a 25mm diameter collimated infra red beam. Optical axis of the beam is 35 mm above the floor.
Single Mode red vertical cavity surface emitting laser( VCSEL)
A single-mode red vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) module with a typical wavelength of 665 nm. Optical power is about 1 mW , electrical voltage 12VDC. The dimensions of the module are 25 mm diameter, length 57 mm. The laser module comprises a single-mode VCSEL emitter, thermo-electric cooler, driver board and output beam collimator. This Laser module is suitable for medical devices and sensors, spectroscopy and industrial applications.
